The arts were an important part of Sophia’s life at an early age.  After completion of formal education, she taught art at public schools, design and pottery as a sessional instructor at the University of Calgary, and gave workshops at community centres.  She was instrumental in designing an art curriculum for Alberta junior high schools. A special merit award was presented to her by Alberta’s Minister of Culture for her involvement  developing and presenting curricula for art courses in community centres across the province.  Her three-dimensional work was exhibited at an International Competition for Contemporary Artistic Ceramics in Faenza, Italy.

More recently, Sophia has given workshops for several local art groups, for Coast Collective Art Centre, and for the Saanich Peninsula Arts and Crafts Association.

Many of Sophia’s sculptural works in clay are a combination of hand building and wheel throwing.  Nature as a superior designer is a constant source of inspiration for her creations.

In the field of painting, Sophia explores composition and design in inks, watercolour, acrylics and mixed media.  Her experimental approach allows for elements of surprise and discovery.  Each of her paintings is an adventure and any subject may become part of the process.
